And what is the meaning?
I would say my art making is a form of
play.   More sophisticated than
juveniles but it still is playing.  So I am
doing a matured form of play. Over all,
this play is the "meaning" of my work.
Matured play?
Yes, more matured.   A Child's play is
about things in space, an adult’s play is
about space in things. In other words,
the work is about my perceptions,
emotions, sense of justice etc. All that
"spiritual" stuff.
When you say “spiritual” do you
mean religious?
Religion is only a part of our
spiritualism.  Don't get me wrong
religion is extremely important for our
individual and social development, but
it’s not the only thing that is spiritual.
Religion like art is metaphor and so
has no monopoly on the Spiritual.
Joseph Campbell says; “It is our myths
that give us our spiritual.”.........And I
say it is art that gives us our myths.
You see, our reality can be looked at
as being divided into the physical and
the metaphysical.   It is the spiritual
(metaphysical) side that concerns my
playing.  Having been raised Catholic
has given me a strong understanding
of Spirituality, yet my work is completely
secular.
Tell me a little about your
technique.
I begin intuitively and work ahead of
what I know.  Then I  search for a
meaning, but it is not until later that I
find it.  The idea of randomness,
chance and intuition comes directly
from John Cage and before him the
Surrealist.  At heart I am a
Conceptualise with a deep respect for
the idea of the "Classic".
And where do your ideas come
from?
Everyday things that I experience. After
all, the truth is always close and can be
as complicated as human emotion, or
as simple as eye candy.
"eye candy"  enjoy!
